State Spring Tennis Tournament Results!!!
The final tournament of the spring tennis season ended on Friday, May 16th. Three Vandegrift athletes qualified for the tournament: Griffin Heintz, Ninaad Nair, and Milagro Wilson. These three placed second in regionals to earn their spot in the state bracket. Milagro competed in girls' singles and fought a tough battle in the first round against El Paso Franklin's Karina Lee. Wilson fell short of victory in the match but gained valuable experience in the process. For a freshman singles player to make it to the state tournament is quite the accomplishment in itself! Griffin Heintz and Ninaad Nair are an outstanding senior doubles team, and the pair made their mark on the tournament by winning their first round 6-2, 6-4 against El Paso Coronado. In their second match, the duo faced a team from Katy Seven Lakes. The match turned into a grueling contest of endurance and expertise from both teams. It was a match that took a total of four hours, from 1pm until 5pm, in the hottest part of an already hot day. Temperatures during the tournament were nearing one hundred degrees fahrenheit. After trailing 1-4 in the first set, Nair and Heintz mounted a comeback to clinch the set 6-4 in style. In the second set, a long series of games that almost ended the match turned into a tiebreaker, and the Vipers lost the set 6-7. After a split-set break, Heintz and Nair kept fighting through physical fatigue to come back from behind again and force a final, deciding tiebreaker. The pair started off behind in the tiebreaker as well but were able to tie the score at six points all. At this point, the match is technically in what other sports would call "overtime." To win the match, a team has to win by two points. Heintz and Nair narrowly lost the tiebreaker 6-8. To push themselves and the other team to such limits was an impressive feat to witness. Both sides were exhausted and showed outstanding shot-making throughout the match. Even though the doubles match will be the pair's final competition as high school athletes, these players will be continuing to play competitive tennis throughout their lives.
Congrats to Griffin, Ninaad, and Milagro on their accomplishments at the State Tennis Tournament!
